Fishing on the Usk River

The last few years have seen difficult water conditions, with a lack of fishing effort during the compulsory catch and release section of the season.  However, the demise of the salmon nets off-shore at Newport, and the fantastic work done on the Salmon reds and spawning grounds in the tributaries have combined to help the Usk River become arguably the best fly water in Wales, and in the top ten in the UK.

Increasing numbers of anglers are becoming aware of the excellent sport now provided by the rivers of South Wales, and in particular the River Usk. With excellent reservoir fishing at Llandegfedd ( which holds the Uk pike record ) and Chew Valley, local coarse fishing, and river catch figures rising rapidly Monmouthshire is very much on the Game fishing map.

This season, in addition to our private trout lake in the grounds, we are delighted to be able to offer exclusive access to two private stretchs of the Usk River just 5 minutes from the hotel, on the breath-taking Kemeys and New House Beats.

The New House Fishery

Three quarters of a mile of single bank fishing, five minutes form the hotel in the middle reaches of the River Usk, the New House was made famous by a local Baron in the 1900's who built the first fishing hut there.  He had one of the first phone's fitted with the memorable number of 'Abergavenny 3' so that his Ghillie could call him whenever the water conditions were perfect.

The beat contains 4 named pools, the Hut Pool being the most productive in recent years, with two 30lb Salmon being landed here.  The Beech Pool is the haunt of some very large Brown Trout, which the river is famed for, and is great dry fly water with the Usk Naylor recommended.

The Kemeys Beat

Covering a mile and a half of picturesque private single bank fishing on the middle reaches of the river between Chainbridge and the top of the Town Water at Usk, this beautiful stretch is a unique combination of peace, tranquillity, stunning wildlife and challenging fishing.

The unspoilt Usk Valley has been designated an area of ‘Special Scientific Interest’ and ‘Outstanding Natural Beauty’, and its beauty is now protected by law. Whether you are a novice chasing your elusive first ‘brownie’ or looking for a hard-running 20lb Salmon, you will be drawn to this area again and again.

We can provide free transport, or parking at the river is off-road, the margins are well cared for, the water is accessible and casting is mostly clear of obstructions. The river is blessed with good numbers of Salmon, wild Brown Trout and Sewin.

The beat includes fly and spinning water, with Daniel’s Pool, the Last Resort and Bridge Pool offering some of the best chances. Easy wading and bank fishing is possible on all pools. Sewin is usually best fished at night, and this can be arranged if required. The annual July run of grilse, and the Autumn run of Salmon are particularly recommended.

Tuition, Lessons and Guiding

Expert tuition, casting lessons and guidance are provided our river guide, either on our own trout lake in the grounds, or on the beat itself. Tackle, rods and suitable clothing can be provided, and we keep a selection of flies at Reception.  Please remember that fishing must be booked in advance to avoid disappointment, and a quick chat with us before your trip will help your catch rate.

Day permits for Trout and Salmon can be purchased at a special rate for residents, and Mark’s services are available by the hour, half day, day or week.

Eating and Drinking

For those who like the finer things in life we would be pleased to lay on a full silver served lunch on the riverbank, complete with waiting staff, champagne and crisp white linen. More traditional picnic hampers, or packed lunches are also available if you prefer. Menus can be tailored to your tastes.

Naturally our Head Chef and his team will be on hand to cook your haul for dinner as you describe the one that got away over a beer...
