Llansantffraed Court Afternoon Tea
Afternoon tea has been with us for over 200 years, and is enjoying a revival now. It is said that the 7th Duchess of Bedford originated the idea in the early 1800s. The idea of serving tea with cakes and sandwiches in the afternoon soon became a tradition, and a good reason for social gatherings. By 1732 the Afternoon Tea become an essential part of entertainment outside of home. The setting at Llansantffraed gives the just the right atmosphere to relive the Duchess’ vision.
Did you know that afternoon tea helped women’s emancipation? In 1864 the Aerated Bread Company started serving tea alongside their cakes, and this is how first the great British Tea Shop was created. Since then tea shops became popular as a place where a lady could meet friends without sullying her reputation!
Tea is served daily in the lounge, which was the original drawing room of the house with high ceilings and lovely south facing views over the terrace, lawns and lake. There will be a roaring log fire in the cooler months or we can serve on the lawns al fresco in the summer.
Sandwiches and ‘proper’ cakes come on wooden Naturally Created boards, which gives a nice ‘rustic’ feel. We offer a wide variety of teas and infusions, or freshly ground coffee, served on a Villeroy Boch crockery, and a crisp, white cloth.
Coffee and Tea and homemade biscuits are available all day, every day.
